The Social Enterprise Task Force - SETF
Workshop 7 Lux’09
Ben Quiñones

1. Project Site

The Social Enterprise Task Force (SETF) is a joint initiative of over 30 organizations in 12 Asian countries (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam). SETF resulted from the Building Shared Vision session conducted by CSRSME Asia among the participants of two successive workshops on Finance for Social Enterprises conducted by CSRSME Asia in Bangkok, Thailand (October 2-5, 2008) and in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (March 10-13, 2009).

2. Objective and Strategic Task

The objective for establishing SETF is to create a space for the community of co-creators of solidarity economy in Asia to exchange experience and information and to engage in joint planning and action.

The strategic task of SETF is to promote the development of solidarity economy through the strengthening of solidarity based social enterprises in Asian countries.

SETF is potentially the forerunner to the Asian Alliance for Solidarity Economy (AASE) which was birthed conceptually at the CSRSME Asia consultative workshop in Bangkok in October 2008.

3. Stakeholders and Beneficiaries

The stakeholders of SETF can be classified into four major categories: social enterprises (engaged in production and/ or distribution of goods and services); financial institutions (banks and non-bank institutions providing finance to social enterprises); technology providers; and researchers/academics/ think tank groups. The target beneficiaries of SETF work are the various clients/ customers of the stakeholders.

4. Current Situation: Dialogue through the www.aa4se.com web2 portal

SETF has set up 6 Workgroups to carry out the major sub-tasks it has identified as crucial for the advancement of solidarity economy initiative in Asia. The list of SETF workgroups and their respective members are listed below. The workgroup members are enjoined to share information and experiences through the web2 portal www.aa4se.com
